Five More Dams planned and approved for Garrison City Rawalpindi

The Rawalpindi authorities have approved the construction of some more state-of-the-art dams in the garrison city. Sources said the Punjab Small Dams Organisation approved the projects for construction of Mujahid and Mohata dams while funds have also been released for construction of these two dams under the Annual Development Programme (ADP).

Both these projects were conceived during the PTI regime, under former federal minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan and were later included in the ADP after approval.

Tenders have been issued to award contracts for the construction of both water storage projects.

According to sources, the estimated cost of the Mujahid Dam, which will be constructed in the Chontra region, is Rs937.73 million, and will be finished in 30 months. An irrigation system will also be laid along with this dam, which will irrigate 7,000 acres of land in the vast rural area of Chontra, the sources said, in addition to around 150,000 people will get benefit of water availability.

On the other hand, the Mohata Dam will be constructed in Raika, the densely populated union council of Rawalpindi District, at an estimated cost of Rs660.23 million, and will be constructed within 18 months. It will help irrigate 6,000 acres of agricultural land in the area.

The two dams will be complemented by amusement parks with fruit and flower plants and thick forest trees grown in the Miyawaki forest style for the delight of the local inhabitants.

The rapidly growing population, rising temperatures in the summers, and incessant droughts have made the construction of these dams crucial.

Another two projects, Chahan and Dadodha Dams are also under construction phases.

The Chahan Dam project, from which the daily supply of water has been increased from six to 12 million gallons, will now cost Rs17 billion instead of Rs9 billion. With this project, the six densely populated UCs of Potohar Town, including Lakhan, Girja-I, Girja-II, Chak Jalal Deen, Mohri Ghazan and Dhamial, will not only be able to get the supply of water as per their requirement but the additional water will also be supplied to other areas of Rawalpindi.

Daducha Dam will be able to supply 35 million gallons daily (MGD) to Rawalpindi city and its cantonment areas, and serve as a reliable source of drinking water for the next 50 years. The area where the dam is being built is part of the Kahuta, Kallar Syedan and Rawalpindi tehsils of the Rawalpindi district.

Papin Dam has been planned in the Chak Bali Khan area which will be constructed at Rs5 billion. It will be a large dam comparable in size to the Rawal Dam. After selecting a suitable location, the government also acquired the land for the project.

Dadocha Dam will fulfil the need of water of Rawalpindi & adjoining areas
